First Batch of Chicken and Ribs in Six Years

Father's Day Weekend,  June 18, 2017

I haven't grilled or smoked any meat for six years. I gave up meat in 2011 when I became a vegan for health reasons.  Over the course of the next few years my health improved and I became a carnivore again but my Smoker /BBQ Pit had long since rusted out.  We decided to get a new smoker pit this weekend and today I enjoyed this Father's Day afternoon coaching Elijah in the fine art of preparing and smoking pork ribs.

Today we seasoned the new smoker with it's first burn, and prepped 3 racks of ribs to cook tomorrow. I showed Elijah how to remove the membrane and trim the excess fat from the ribs.  We also made our own home made rib rub which was a collaboration of Bobby Flay and Alton Brown influences. Elijah loves Bobby Flay.

Here's some resources Elijah and I used to create our personalized rib rub:

Will probably grill some chicken and sausage tonight and I have my first brisket scheduled for two weeks from now: July 2, for our church BBQ...!

I love grilling very much, and am excited that Elijah has a keen interest in cooking too, so this is something we can enjoy together.   What a sweet relaxing day this has been.  To God be the Glory!
